Woman wins $1 million on scratchoff in Ocean Isle

An Ocean Isle Beach woman became the seventh person to win $1 million by playing the 130 Million Blockbuster instant-win scratch-off game, said Neosha Smith, spokeswoman for the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Maria Kane purchased her winning game ticket from the Minuteman Food Mart not far from her home on Causeway Drive, Smith said Monday.

Store manager Janice Robinson said that in the past two years there two other store customers won large sums of money playing the lottery. One woman, who won $200,000 around Valentine’s Day last year, gave every store employee a card with $100 in it, Robinson said.

“We sell a pretty good amount of tickets,” she said. “We sell more tickets when people hear that we’ve had big winners at the store.”

Robinson said that she once won $280 playing the lottery at the store.

Kane first entered the food mart and bought a Monopoly instant-win scratch-off ticket. That ticket was not a winner. Then Kane recalled that her boyfriend had won a prize playing the 130 Million Blockbuster game, according to a lottery press release. But Kane wasn’t sure if she should return to the store to test her luck on the game. One such game ticket costs $10.

After some deliberation, Kane returned to the store and bought two 130 Million Blockbuster game tickets, one of which was a top-prize winner, Smith said.

After winning the prize, Kane told lottery officials that her winnings will be used to pay off her car and to start a college fund for her children. The prize is paid out in installments of $50,000 a year for 20 years.

Kane has already received her first check, and told lottery officials the money is going straight into the bank. Kane could not be reached for comment Monday.

Laura Sargent, an employee of the food mart, said she does not play the lottery often, but after hearing about Kane’s win she is going “to buy (a ticket) tonight.”

“That’s awesome,” Sargent said, referring to Kane’s win
